Mint Selection – more goodies

My memory is going out the window completely, especially since I forget to post about candy :p Never thought I’d forget things like that…haha

Anyway, The Old Original Bakewell Pudding Store sells a lot of other things except from the pudding I told you about a few minutes ago. They also have jams, marmalade, tea, coffee, spices, a big selection of breads and pastry, souvenirs and candy. This box of mint candy was not planned, it kind of sneaked up on me while we were waiting in line at the counter for our turn :p But it’s nice :D I haven’t got a clue if they manufacture their own hard candy or if they just label these tins and sell them, but I really don’t care. As long as they are good, the brand or the name on the label doesn’t mean that much.

Most of these things are overpriced of course since Bakewell is a real tourist trap. Which is why it’s probably a good thing this happens at the most once a year :p I’ve got some videos from our walk through town earlier today that I haven’t even got off my cell phone yet, but I will take a look and see if they are worth uploading.

Now I don’t think I’ve forgotten anything :p

Bakewell pudding – the real thing

We took a ride up to Bakewell earlier today, mainly because it’s a beautiful little town in the summer…but also because there is an art festival during this week. And when you are in Bakewell there’s just no way you can leave without either been on the second floor at The Original Bakewell Pudding Shop, or elbowed your way to the counter on the first floor to buy a Bakewell pudding to bring home. At least I never managed to leave without a Bakewell pudding since I had it the first time almost 7 years ago now.

There are a lot of history behind this pudding and even heating instructions, so you can’t really make any mistakes…even though this pudding was a mistake to begin with.

However, it is a delicious mistake and I’m having the piece you see in the photo here as I’m typing this. It doesn’t happen often that we go to Bakewell any more…this is the first time in almost 2 years…and I really don’t like any other versions of this pudding.
Robin bought clotted cream for this today, which is not really my favorite, but it’s too sweet without anything. Clotted cream is a bit too thick for my taste.

In any case, it’s really nummies and if you get a chance and come around the Derbyshire Dales, do stop by at Bakewell. It’s well worth it ;)

A month with my Green Love Juice

A bit more than a month ago I decided that I had to do something about my way of living in general, and in particular about my veggie intake. Not that I don’t eat my vegetables. It was more a matter of how I eat them. Most of the time it’s been a part of any warm meal, boiled veggies on the side of the plate, which is also the most common way of eating them. Or the occasional salad.

However, I needed a real detox, a phenomenon that I never really believed in. I’ve had friends who done similar things and praised the effects of it, but to live on nothing but liquid for a week at the time is not for me.
The way I’ve done it still allow me to eat as usual and still clean up on the inside. I can even eat my occasional cake, cookies, ice cream and candy :p And that’s the main reason why I need this on a daily basis, because within the past month this has become a habit that I have no intention on giving up.

And it’s a good habit for a change too. It still feels a bit stupid to load the cart at the supermarket with 10 cucumbers, 2-3 big bags of apples, loads of celery and so on…but the staff in the cash register never flinch when they see my mountain of veggies. The “5-a day” guidelines that we have around here have been the least of my worries this last month, that’s for sure ;) This is a real love story and it’s like pure gold for your body.

Most of the time I make a drink in the morning that contains the following:

At occasion I buy carrots at the marketplace and add a couple of those as well. All of it goes into the juicer or mixer, and it lasts for most part of the day. I also drink it for most of my meals instead of soda or water. If not, it’s water instead.

It took a while before I saw any results from this but during the past week I’ve noticed that I’ve lost a few inches around my waist, I’ve got easier to focus and there’s no drawbacks at all with this. The only thing to keep in mind is that you need to drink a bit more water than normally. At least if you are as “good” at remembering your water intake as I am :p There’s a lot of fibre in this juice, but it will keep your tummy going if you remember the water.

Most of the time the colour of the juice will be just as green as in the picture above, but it happens that I add some tomatoes in the juicer and in return the juice looks like old dish water :p It doesn’t taste bad, but since half the experience has to do with the visual impression it’s easier to drink when it’s nothing but green, I have to admit that.

If you’re looking for more energy, better skin, weight-loss or if you have difficult to eat your veggies on a daily basis I can recommend this. And make sure that you wash away that layer of wax on the apples btw. After some time you can remove one apple from this daily mix. Fruit sugar adds up in the end and for the sake of the flavour your taste buds will learn to like the greens without the sweetness of the apple after a while.

So from a non-believer who thought this was nothing but just another “diet” – this actually works and you can continue to eat the way you used to. One thing though – if you’re big on take-outs, fastfood or anything similar – try to move away from that as soon as you can. To go through the trouble and make this drink every morning won’t do you much good if your daily diet is based on additives and fatty foods. I stick to fresh food and I make more of my meals from scratch with very few or no additives, which adds to the effect.
And if you don’t know how to cook – spend some time and money on a cooking class. It’s worth it in the end, believe me :)
