Thoughts about upgrade – again

wpDuring the past couple of days I’ve upgraded two of my 2.7.1 WordPress blogs to 2.8.2, except for this one. It honestly seems that they fixed a lot of the problems that occurred when people tried to upgrade to 2.8 a while back and ended up with either a white page and nothing else, or a messy Dashboard that didn’t function any more.

But…the blogs I’ve upgraded so far are fairly new. They don’t have a lot of posts or comments in them, and the databases are fairly clean…so that’s the main reason I’m hesitating to upgrade this one. Besides, I was flirting with the beta versions of WP 2.7 in this blog, which ultimately might have made a difference for how the upgrade to 2.8 turned out. After all, the database was upgraded and downgraded several times around, the last time when I downgraded WP to 2.7.1. So who knows. I might wreck this place all together.

In any case, I just might gather all the courage I’ve got and give it a try in a couple of hours or so. Need to do some backups of the database first since I won’t take any chances. And I just might skip the simple way by clicking that link at the top and upgrade manually via FTP.
We’ll see.
It was really a bummer with the upgrade to 2.8 a while back since I like WordPress and everything they’ve done to this piece of software. Yes, there’s been way too many upgrades in the past and I got rather sick and tired of their once-a-week-security-upgrades for a while…but other than that it rarely failed.

Anyway… if this place goes into Maintenance Mode later, you know why. And if it’s gone all together after that, you’ll know why too :pp If the later happens, I’ll be in the back of a dark closet somewhere :p

If you need to downgrade your WP 2.8, here’s how

Since it seems that WordPress ignored to provide a download for earlier versions of WordPress, I’ve decided to add a .rar file of WordPress 2.7.1 on my server if you need to downgrade from WordPress 2.8.

If you end up in a situation where I was about half an hour ago, where the dashboard is messed up, image uploader won’t work, the tags menu won’t work…or any of the other menus for that matter…or if you just want to go back to 2.7.1, you can download the files at the bottom of this post in a .rar file.

When you downgrade, make sure that you’re not overwriting the wp-config.php AND that you open the wp-content and it’s sub folders before you overwrite anything in there. Otherwise you’ll lose plugins and your theme.

Other than that, just upload everything over FTP.
Go to your login screen, log in and it will ask you to upgrade the database.
If you haven’t already, make a backup of your database before you click the button that tells it to upgrade.
And that’s it.
Downgrade is done.

You will know that it succeeded when you go to your dashboard and see the phrase: “WordPress 2.8 is available! Please update now.”
That means that everything should be back in working order again.

Edit:

WordPress do have an archive where you can download previous versions.

Download the version you had before and follow the instructions above.

Shame this release archive was not available before.

PS. If you have no clue what any of this means, or if parts of it makes you go “eh?”, take a look at this post instead. It is more detailed and explain most things that has to do with servers, databases and how to do this.
